Teacher and TESOL Trainer Profiles

EXTENSIVE QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

At IH Sydney – Teacher Training Centre we select our teachers and teacher trainers based upon their qualifications, level and range of experience, communication skills and ability to support students and teacher trainees. 

Teacher Trainers

As a minimum all International House Sydney – teacher trainers are accredited by Cambridge University as teacher trainers and hold the following: 

  • university degree
  • TESOL certificate - Cambridge CELTA, Certificate IV in TESOL or Trinity Certificate in TESOL
  • post graduate professional qualifications - Cambridge DELTA,  Trinity Diploma TESOL, MEd (TESOL), MA (TESOL), MA (Applied Linguistics)
  • an average of 12 years teaching/training experience.

Their qualifications are enhanced by their extensive work experience including positions as EFL published authors, Cambridge University assessors and examiners, Director of Studies and School Director. Collectively, they have worked and lived in over 30 countries and are passionate about sharing their knowledge with their students. 

All trainers have experience in:

  • design and delivery of teacher training courses and materials as initial teacher training and professional development for experienced teachers
  • observation and assessment of teachers in the classroom and the provision of feedback
  • teaching a range of English classes: general English, examination classes (IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC and Cambridge),  Business English, English for specific purposes (ESP) and academic English (EAP) from beginner to advanced level
  • professional development of teachers.

English Teachers

As a minimum all International House Sydney English teachers will hold :

  • a university degree
  • accredited TESOL qualifications eg. Cambridge CELTA or Certificate IV in TESOL.

Teachers are chosen for their ability to engage and develop students. Many of our English language teachers are aiming to develop their skills in the area of teacher training and as a result we attract energentic and ambitious teachers who are genuinely focused on their students' progress. Any teachers who have shorter professional teaching experience will have achieved the highest grades in their initial TESOL training.

     SARAH BUNYAN - DIRECTOR OF STUDIES

Sarah holds a BA (Hons) English Literature/DT, Cambridge CELTA, Postgraduate Certificate in Education and Training, Cambridge DELTA and MA in EFL Teaching and Applied Linguistics and a Certificate IV in TAE. She has taught since 1996 in England, Brazil, Turkey, Poland and Australia. These positions have included teaching younger learners, teenagers and adults in a range of classes including General English, Cambridge exam preparation classes and 1-to-1.   She is a Cambridge CELTA and DELTA trainer and a Cambridge CELTA assessor.

 

DENIS NORTON    

Sydney born and bred, Denis has taught in Indonesia, Bulgaria and Australia since 1994. He has a Cambridge DELTA and worked with the British Council for seven years teaching IELTS, EAP, Cambridge suite Exam classes, plus Business and General English. He has been an IELTS examiner and ICT consultant. Since joining IH (in early 2008), he has trained on Certificate IV TESOL, Cambridge CELTA as Main Course Tutor and gained accreditation for Certificate IV TAA.

 

     JO ROBERTS

Jo holds a BA ( Hons) in Modern Languages, a Postgraduate Certficate of Education in ESOL and Modern Languages and the CERT IV TAE. She has been teaching English since 2001 to a range of levels (from beginners to advanced) and in a range of contexts ( for example teenagers and migrant programmes). She was highly involved with courses teaching literacy, numeracy and IT as Basic Skills in Further Education colleges in London, and developed and then trained on the CERT FE for ESOL subject specialists. She has been working as a CELTA, CERT IV TESOL and ETYL trainer at IH Sydney since 2008. She is also an online CELTA tutor and a Cambridge assessor.

 

RACHEL BASTOW    

On finishing her BA in Russian and Italian in 1998, Rachel took the CELTA and has been teaching English around the world ever since. She has worked in Poland, Italy, the UK, Spain and Portugal as well as Australia. Her experience includes teaching general English, business English and exam preparation to groups of adults, one-to-ones, and young learners of all ages. She has been involved in teacher training since 2002, presenting at conferences and working as a Director of Studies before becoming a CELTA trainer in 2005. She has the Cambridge DELTA, Certificate IV in TAE, is a Cambridge CELTA assessor and an examiner for IELTS and Cambridge Upper Main Suite.

 

     REBECCA WRIGHT

After graduating from university in 2002, Becky travelled to Ghana where she gained her initial classroom experience teaching HIV and AIDS awareness in a vocational school. Her enjoyment of that experience led her to train as an ESL teacher the following year. Since then, she has lived and taught in the Czech Republic, Taiwan, Italy and most recently, Australia. Originally from the UK, she returned home regularly to hold Director of Studies and Centre Manager positions at a summer school for international teenagers. She has extensive experience teaching young learners and adults from beginner to advanced level as well as preparing learners on specialist courses in the Cambridge suite and IELTS. She has worked as a Cambridge examiner, holds the Cambridge DELTA certificate and currently works at IH Sydney as a teacher and CELTA trainer.

YULIANTO LUKITO    

Yulianto Lukito holds a Bachelor of Economics, Masters of Applied Linguistics, Masters of Arts (MA) in TESOL, Cambridge CELTA and Cambridge DELTA. He is also an acredited translator and interpreter, having obtained the NAATI ( National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters) in 2003. He has been teaching a variety of English courses at universities, private colleges and high schools since 1998 in Indonesia and Australia. Besides teaching English to a range of levels ( Beginner to Advanced), he has extensive experience in teaching specialist courses such as IELTS, English for Academic Purposes ( EAP), TOEFL, Professional Business Communication and Cambridge courses (FCE and CAE). He is also a certified IELTS examiner ( Speaking and Writing) and has been a Certificate IV in TESOL trainer since 2011. 

 

     CATERINA JUAN 

Cat holds an MA in Media Practice from the University of Sydney as well as a CELTA and Certificate IV accreditation. She has taught in both the Philippines and Australia since 2000. Before joining IH in 2009, Cat taught literature and creative writing to primary school-aged children from immigrant families in Cabramatta. She is currently one of the trainers on the ETYL course.

 

HIROKO SHEEHAN    

Hiroko San trains on the Japanese accredited J-Shine programme providing extensive knowledge of the Japanese primary school system.  Hiroko's teaching experience spans 26 years both in Japan and Australia, at Primary and High School level.  Her teaching qualifications, Bachelor of Education (Primary/High School), were gained in Tokyo.
